The forum is yours...

OK Big Macs fans, aka Canon Crazies, you've called yourselves the best fans in the WPIAL on this board. Now, the Varsity Letters leaves the floor open to you.

We're asking those in attendance or listening on WJPA-AM 1450 to offer their perspective on the first-round playoff win and Charles Murphy's last-second winner from just inside half-court.

Feel free to describe, brag, boast or offer your predictions on the quarterfinals versus Pittsburgh Central Catholic. Did you rush the court? Did you hug mommy? Did you act a fool? Do tell.

A few of you have talked the talk all winter, now it's time for the rest to join the fun.

first of all, i am a cm alumni who was once a canon-crazy and still follows the team.

secondly, although the game was extremely entertaining and Murphy's last minute shot was rediculous, c-m probably didn't deserve to win that game. if we play like that next week, we'll get killed.

On a lighter note, the canon-crazies this year have been excellent. The turnout has been higher than previous years, and the kids' support during the games hase been phenominal. This year alone they have accomplished white outs, black outs, gold outs, and a blue out, each time with quality participation. I doubt there are many schools in the wpial who are on the same level as them. With about a minute to go in the game, the pa announcer said no one was allowed on the court, which pretty much cut any chances of them storming the court. Never the less when the final shot went through they all rushed courtside right behind the cm bench to celebrate (only held back by their principle and Montacalvo)

You have a quality blog going here. keep it up

The last second shot by CM's Charles Murphy was the latest exciting chapter of this edition of the 07-08 Can Mac Boys basketball season. Great win for the Macs as they advance into the next round of the playoffs against Central Catholic. Having been battled tested in arguable the toughest section in the WPIAL (3 out of the 8 teams still standing are from section IV), section IV competition has prepared the Big Macs very well for what lies ahead.

The Canon Crazies again remain without peer in the battle of the students section across the WPIAL. Clearly out numbering the Shaler student section by 3 to 1 and decked out in their color coordinated "white out" apparel, they continue to show their creativity in their support of their Big Macs. Whether it is shouting "push it", after reacting to a questionable call or storming the "sidelines" after the game winning shot by Murphy, or chanting "you can't do that" after a Shaler's turnover, the Canon Crazies are worth the price of admission as a stand a lone act.

Charles Murphy, worlds better than Brian Davis. Greatest. Shot. Ever.

My prediction: Canon-Mac 98, Central Catholic 3.

Since the days of Jason Santelli and Joe Malone('03 graduates), Canon McMillan has held a tradition of loud and enthusiastic support for its athletic teams. Win or lose the Canon Crazies will be there and without a voice at the end of the night. As a fan, it is easy to get discouraged when your team is not winning that much, but CM's fans have stuck in there through the good and the bad. Its nice to see the fans getting rewarded for their support and its equally as satisfying to see this team and coach have the success that they are having after all their hard work.

I didn't get to see the game sounds as if was a breath taker. Congrat's CM. Please let me remind you BD excelled in football, this is basketball. Apples to Apples. Murphy is an excellent and exciting player. I love to watch him play.

Anonymous said...

BD was a gifted bball player. 5foot 10" center on a state championship team. state long jump champion. Your doing him a disservice comparing any local athlete to him past or present. He was in a league of his own.

Anonymous said...

If you two honestly think that the other anonymous is being serious about the Brian Davis stuff your nuts.

Anonymous said...

It is not fair to compare Brian Davis and Charles Murphy. Most high school athletes never saw Brian Davis play football. Some may have seen him on tape. Brian Davis maybe the best football player in the history of Wash High. Doug Kotar was the best football player in Canon Mac history. Mike Hull could take that spot. Charles Murphy could be the best basketball player in Canon Mac history but only time will tell. I've seen all of them play and enjoyed watching all of them.

Anonymous said...

I have to disagree with anonymous that BD was in a league of his own. Doug Kotar belongs in that league.

Anonymous said...

BD is mentioned as the best player in the wpial ever. Doug was good but everyone knows that brian was better. Canon Mac had some ball players back in the day(Ron Bozik, chocolate E, skip patterson, Mike Dates, Butch Robinson and so forth.) Charles is decent but he wasn't better than these guys

I respect anonymous's opinion that BD was the best player in the wpial. It is his opinion and he is entitled to it! I wonder what Joe Montana might think? I'm sure that any athlete that was that great would have his accomplishments validated beyond high school. It is fun to argue who was or will be the best athlete in the wpial. But to declare one, when there have been so many is not realistic.

Speaking of Canonsburg basketball, there's a fella who played with Don Hennon at Pitt during the 1950's who still ranks among Pitt's all-time leading scorers. His name is Bob Lazor. Another starter at Pitt at the time was John Riser, who played at Wash High.

Like Lazor, Riser is also part of Pitt's 1,000-point club.

I too have seen Murphy play several times. He's a great high school player but let's give Lazor his due.

I like where this post is going.

Charles Murphy is one of the most underrated players to come out of the WPIAL in recent years. There are many reasons for this: CM isnt known as a talent producer or a winner, he isnt a real quick kid, hes not that tall, and he isnt a flashy kid who looks to make highlights. However, the kid is a tremendous basketball player. He has the ability to play anywhere on the floor and understands basketball very well. He shoots very well, plays adequate defense, passes well, and can rebound. If there is someone Charles Murphy reminds me of its a guy by the name of Jaron Brown, who played at Pitt a few years back. Charles Murphy flat out gets the job done. Whoever he plays for next year found themselves a steal and a true gamer.

Charles Murphy - a mini Jaron Brown.

As someone who has covered Pitt hoops for years and C-M basketball, I think it's a perfect description.

I agree Mike.

I am in a league of my own, but not as the greatest football player all-time in the wpial. I'd have to say im the biggest bust ever from the wpial. Thanks to my great academic effort at Pitt i was able to play in the 1985 season until dropping out. Sorry, but we have a few other players from the wpial that managed to make more of themselves than i did. I believe they made it to Canton as well. Right now im just enjoying myself working for a printing company in Maryland.

charles murphy is a great player but he learned all his moves from sonny bilingsley

Anonymous said...

i would have to say brian kretz is the biggest basketball powerhouse canon-mcmillan has ever produced

Anonymous said...

No doubt, that Brian Kretz kid was legit as hell.

I always thought Demi Moore was one of the great talents to spend time in Canonsburg.

And I heard Perry Como had mad game.

Anonymous said...

I like Charles Murphy<3

Anonymous said...

Responding to the Sonny Billingsley post, I think that is completely untrue I would have to say Charles Murphy learned all his moves from Nick "turtle" Toward.

when talking about Murphy we tend to forget about Andre Hayden who is the real backbone of the CM offense! He is also damn good looking!

Anonymous said...

I love Dre so much!

We ought to go to the waffle house some time Cam!

USC Blows

I think Peggy Hayden is a huge contributor to CM's success. Her good looks distract opposing teams.

Wow, i think there needs to be a signup with email registration from now on... haha

Mike,
This was an awesome idea! These kids are the BEST fans in the WPIAL! I hope future students will keep the fan frenzy alive! This is a fine example of why they are called CRAZY!
Another reason I'm a proud C-M mom!

Anonymous said...

The crazies support for there teams has been in full force even with the BIG MACS were losing. Given the combination of a winning team and the Canon crazies..WE WILL UNLEASH THE POWER OF THE BIG MACS.

Anonymous said...

The "Best of Clair Mish" is the video that gets the team pumped before games.
