Four cited for roles in brawl at Washington-Monessen game

Two adults and two juveniles were issued citations for disorderly conduct by the Monessen Police Department for their roles in a fight that erupted between fans during halftime of Friday night's boys basketball game between Washington and Monessen at Monessen High School.

Lt. Ed Lyons said the incident started between a Monessen juvenile and "a couple" Washington juveniles before quickly escalating. Three people from Washington were cited and one from Monessen.

The fight began between females in the hallway and spilled into the gymnasium.

Monessen Police plan to release names early next week after reviewing video taken during the altercation.

Monessen school administrators have confirmed that its current girls basketball players were not involved.

This is why there is such a stigma on Wash High! Why does it seem like kids would rather live the "thug life" than to live a respectable life. What good did the fight do? It started between girls, are you kidding me!!! What kind of girl does it take to start a near riot? Kudos to Coach Gaither and the team for their act of restraint. This situation could get real ugly in the future if someone doesn't step up and teach the younger generation some manners!!

Mike your article in sundays paper rubbed a whole lot of people wrong in wash today. The only thing they were talking about at the LP game was you. First you should get your facts straight before you go writing articles. It was a 19 yr ols moness girl who pushed a 13 year old girl and two washington girls defended her that started it. Secondly the wh fans were yelling at the moness players because they seen two of their buddies trying to fight two wash students. if you watch the video you clearly see that coaches and police keep pushing the players away from the stands. who armed themselves with chairs - nobody a complete exagerration. Also, the mon school district should have kept the student section on the other side. That was probably the biggest contributor of it all from the first half. And the rumor it was over a boy is so ridiculous its not even worth commenting on. These things happen at all schools from time to time. North Cath/South Fay had problems friday as did Mt lebo. whats their label goin to be? We dont condone it but things do happen from time to time. I hope you make some retractions because your not real popular in washington. Even though we know your anti- WH as it is.

From my standpoint, right beside the Washington bench, I absolutely saw charis being taken from the Washington bench. Did they swing the chairs? No. Did they grab them? Yes.

Now you tell me, do you grab a chair in the middle of a fight to get a closer seat?

I stand by that as I witnessed it.

It's not my job to be popular or for/against any team. I have nothing against Wash High, enjoy talking to the players and coaches. In the same story, I also stated Washington is a clear challenger to the WPIAL title and offered perspective from Troy Wilson.

These things do not happen at schools from time to time.

I love how people are saying it is Monessen's fault for sitting the fans on the same side. Are you serious? Let's find somebody else to blame besides ourselves because we can't be expected to sit beside another human being without fighting. Give me a break! If you are that out of control, you should never leave home. Big mouth kids couldn't keep their big mouths shut. It escalated to near riot status because of the total lack of respect any of the big mouth kids have for any type of authority figure. Don't point fingers unless you are looking in the mirror.

Time to remember who you are and if you are the bigger person. This was an unfortunate incident. There are good and bad at all schools. Let's not label everyone as "thugs". Every and all are very strong words. Sometimes the kids mimick the adults.

@ Anon 5:27 pm.....

Unfortunate incident? An unfortunate incident is the earthquake in Haiti....There are good and bad at all schools I agree - but what happened is not unfortunate....

Its a mentality...Im better than you and if you dont like it, then lets start throwing blows...

Honestly, Monessen boys program is the most disgraceful program of any sport in the entire WPIAL. How can their coach really still be there? As far as Washington, they arent too far away with their new wonderful coach...who "promotes" sportsmanship and discipline..haha thats a joke. The new era has begun and everyone was right. Its downhill from here. The decades of there former coach promoting and enforcing the right things built a good program that stayed. They may be winning some games, but the work or Coach Faust done over decades has been torn down within just a few months. Way to discipline and hole your players accountable Coach Gaither!! Headed to a reputation worse than Monessen within 3 months and lets think whats going to be going on in a year from now.

Honestly "most disgraceful program", wow you obviously don't get out much. Maybe the best thing we can do as adults, if you are one, is to be a better role model. Unfortunately, some kids aren't as lucky as others in having one parent at home let alone two. This isn't meant just for Monessen but everywhere. Maybe the WPIAL will really crack down and enforce the GPA's and then what will alot of young athletes do. If you commit the crime do the time, unless you aren't held accountable for it.
