Games of the Week – Week 8

For playoff-contending teams, or teams trying to make Week 9 meaningful, the final two games are must-win situations.

Charleroi (5-2) at Washington (5-2)
Last week, McGuffey demonstrated how to slow Charleroi running back Quentin Briggs - gang tackling. The Highlanders are a physical football team but that doesn't mean Wash High can't take some of those tactics, use their overall speed and put them to use.

That could be the key to this key Interstate Conference game. If Wash High makes tackles near the line of scrimmage early, it will benefit the Prexies greatly. Charleroi, meanwhile, must find ways to slow the Prexies' emerging group of playmakers.

One way to do so is to pressure quarterback Marquis Brown, who can break down a defense with his scrambling.

Burgettstown (3-4) at Fort Cherry (5-2)
For all the tribulations Fort Cherry went through in weeks five and six, the Rangers can still finish in second place in the Black Hills Conference and host a home playoff game. To do so, beating Burgettstown is a must as is Serra Catholic losing to Clairton next week.

The Rangers shook off two bad performances last week at Frazier. Not an easy thing to do for a team rife with underclassmen.

Burgettstown, on the other hand, needs this game to stay in the playoff picture. The Blue Devils have good skill players but depth and lack of size have hurt against top teams. Size and depth don't always matter in a rivalry as heated as thi.

gee, what a threat. now we know where our childrent get the attitude. we were at Clairton for JV, C was very respectful. Same as there varsity parents. I was appaulled to know we had so many cops at B. As, we went to the fc vs B varsity basketball game one year, we sat in the bleachers on the left when you walk in the fc gym. A parent fc says our boosters sit here only. I paid my admission for myself and the college who was scouting my son and some others, the scout says I guess fc doesn't need a d I player. Parents shut up...........

mike you picked a good game to watch. i told you wash high had playmakers. remember whitaker and kelly are freshman and brower is a young sophmore. briggs is everything they say he is. he took a beating but also gave one. ok wash high sometimes its better to be lucky than good but wash high is both.with jeannette losing we should be in.

Congratulations Wash High on a huge win!!!......You Prexies made my season when you beat Jeannette!!!

It's nice to see the Prexies get things turned around. I'm happy for you guy's and your fans. I'm also excited about McGuffey. Now, I have a huge dilema. I really want to see next weeks BIG showdown in Taylorstown, but I can't miss the the Hillers playoff game against Ringgold.......One of these games has to be moved to Saturday....lol

Fort Cherry lost to Avella and almost lost to a very weak Burgettstown team. I am not sure what happened in the Serra game but the chances on FC winning a playoff game are pretty slim in my opinion.
Burgettstown will lose to Avella as well. The Black Hills conference is as bad as Tri County minus Clairton. Just bad football. Bad.

i didnt see the fumble because it was away from the stands at the far sideline. the kids all say he fumbled the ball, but you know how they are, they will never admit it if it wasnt. the question is why not take a knee they may have had to punt but wash high would have had about 10 seconds to race the length of the field.washington will not quit with this group of kids. dont feel bad for briggs he got 2 more years. feel bad for charlerois seniors.

Interesting point about taking the knee. Couple sides to that story.

Say Charleroi takes the knee and has to punt. You run the risk of a punt block or punt return. In talking with Charleroi coach Luke Mollis after the game, he sure didn't want Washington to get the football back.

Also, there was confusion about the timeouts. Mollis believed Washington had one left. Prexies coached confirmed after the game that they were out of timeouts.

Was it scoreboard error? Communication breakdown?

Regardless, Washington has nothing to apologize for. And I have no problem with Charleroi going for the first down to seal the game.

the 2 point conversion was kind of like the fumble mendenhall had a couple games ago. brown was stopped but he kept pushing and he was laying across his lineman in front of him and he just stretched the ball over the line. like mendenhall he never touched the ground.he keeps making great plays.i think that was a good call.i think its the coaches job to know how many time outs are left for the other team that should be football 101. maybe a run up the middle with both hands on the football instead of an off tackle run for 1 yrd would be a better call.all of these things will probably be discussed for years to come.the problem i have is alot of the media has charleroi losing the game instead of wash high making the plays and winning the game.channel 4 talked more about jeannette during the highlights of that game than washington.

I wouldn't say that the Blackhills is a very bad conference just yet. Burgettstown played SS Beaver very tough and won at Beth Center and this same team may not even make the playoffs. Serra beat what could be the Eastern Conference winner and California, who should be a playoff team. Point is out of conference the Blackhills is just as strong as anybody and Avella beating Fort Cherry and Bentworth playing everyone tough is proving the depth of the Blackhills not its weakness. The only conference that is truely stronger than the rest is the Big 7. The Eastern and Blackhills make up the 2nd tier and the Tri County South yet again is the weakest of the 4.
