Games of the Week – Week 6

If this week's slate of top games generates as much discussion as last week's, The Varsity Letters is going to be a busy place.

McGuffey at Jeannette
McGuffey enters this key Class AA Interstate Conference contest with the best defense in the classification in terms of points allowed (32). The Highlanders have given up all their points on the road, which is where they will be this week. At 4-1, McGuffey is tied with Jeannette, Charleroi and for second place. Mt. Pleasant (5-0) is first.

Jeannette is coming off a 26-20 home loss to Charleroi. The Cougars, behind Quentin Briggs, chewed up more than 400 yards of offense and held off a late rally. The Jayhawks were without a couple regulars.

Weather could play a significant factor in this game. Chances are McGuffey won't mind a steady rain.

South Fayette at Seton-La Salle
After beating Keystone Oaks and Sto-Rox, South Fayette has its sights set on an outright Class AA Century Conference title, which would be the team's first since moving up to Class AA. Quarterback Christian Brumbaugh and running back Jeff Davis are in the midst of outstanding season.

For Seton-La Salle (4-1), avoiding an early deficit at Chartiers Valley Stadium is a focus. The undefeated Lions have jumped on all five opponents.

Baldwin at Canon-McMillan
Baldwin went into last week's game against Peters Township without a win and left with a 1-0 record in the Great Southern Conference. Beating the Big Macs would guarantee the Highlands a spot in the WPIAL playoffs.

C-M beat Baldwin, 53-6, at Baldwin a year ago. The Big Macs are coming off a loss to Upper St. Clair, which plays Bethel Park in a contest where the winners becomes the conference favorite. Canon-McMillan isn't worried about speculation, it just wants to win a conference game.

Is Frazier really in Fayette County?
How in the world did Clairton and Frazier land in the Black Hills Conference. BTW, I really like the name of that conference. Slate dumps are my friend.

WHY IS IT THAT THE PREXIES ARE HARDLY EVER MENTIONED ANYMORE IN ANY OF THESE STORIES??? ANY COMMENTS ON HOW COACH BOSNIC IS HANDLING THINGS AT THE "HIGH"?

Wash High

THE PREXIES PLAY IN A CRAPPY CONFERENCE WITH ONLY A COUPLE OF GOOD TEAMS AND A BUNCH OF DREK. Try taking the caps off dude.

Is Trinity really 1-5? Could this spell the end for Big Ed?

You can say what you want about losing to CM and TJ and CV, but Greensburg Salem and now a very weak Belle Vernon team?

Might be time for a change on the hill.

Avella beat Fort Cherry?!?!?!?!

Clairton Alum said...

CONGRATULATIONS AVELLA!!

Fort Cherry...I am not here to gloat or make fun of you guys or talk trash. This was a great win for the Avella program...but what happened? Mike are you or someone doing a story on this game? I am sure there probably werent a lot of reporters there for this one...was anyone there that can add some insight as to what happened?

Is it time for the Garry's to step down? Since 1959 they haven't won a WPIAL title and now they can't beat Avella. Time for some new blood in McDonald.

Might be a good idea... kids and coaches quitting after a tough Clairton loss, then stinking it up against Avella...? C'mon, Avella? FC should have won that game 42-6. I blame it on the coaches for the letdown after the Clairton game. They must have thought they could just show up for the last conf. games and coast...

I know there has always been an anti-Garry movement in the Fort Cherry area but I believe it would be a mistake removing the head coach.

Same thing for Trinity though it's easy to understand that Hillers fans are upset that a season which began with expectations is sitting at 1-5.

For Fort Cherry, this could be a case of a young team dealing with adversity created from losing to Clairton.

Ok Anon 8:35, its apparent you dont attend the high, because DREK isnt in our vocabulary!!!

Frazier ran 4 plays and beat Burgettstown. If you can't stop a power I when everyone at the field knows where the ball is going do you really deserve to be in the playoffs? If anyone needs replaced in the black hills conference it is Matt Taylor at Burgettstown....Avella may beat Burgettstown as well.

wash high is doing fine thank you. although they will need to really play perfect to make the playoffs they are 100% better than last year. coach bosnic is doing his best. i do think the play calling can be a little better.they have the atheletes for the passing game but dont utilize them enough. defensivly they get out of position alot. maybe if they pay attention watching film. some kids act like its calculusII. 4 AND 2 after a 1 and 8 season how can you bash this team. remember wash high was only 5 kids from being a single a school, i wouldnt think single a schools would care to play them. i think with the talent coming up some triple a schools may not want to play them either.believe me if you watch some of these atheletes on this team make plays you wouldnt be falling asleep.

I heard some players texted the Avella coach. I know this for a 'fact' because I spoke to a spouse of an Avella coach.

Oh, it's true.

For the playoff picture.

Clairton should win out easier than I originally thought they would.

Fort Cherry should win out. I expect them to take out Frazier, Burgettstown and Char Houston. But it won't be easy for the Rangers. If they win out they'll get 2nd spot.

Serra should beat Char Houston and Frazier but like Fort Cherry it won't be easy because if they struggled against Bentworth those 2can easily beat Serra.

Where things are interesting is for the last spot between Frazier, Burgettstown and Char Houston. I think gardner points to settle it out. Burgettstown beat Char Houston 21-6 Char Houston beat Frazier 17-0 and Frazier beat Burgettstown 21-20. I think Char Houston would get the spot. Someone correct me if i'm wrong. But things definately got interesting in the Blackhills. Fort Cherry losing to Avella hurt their playoff seeding more than anything. I think they deserved the 5th spot if they won out. Now I think they'll get the 6th or 7th which means they'll most likely find themselfs a Big 7 school.

That's funny.

I agree as usual Prexie! It would be sweet to be in the Black Hills Conference! The HIGH would OWN IT!! 5 away? That would be great, it's either feast or famine in the Interstate Conference, no good games to be played you either give it or take it!

Anonymous said...

the "HIGH" would own the black hills? you obviously forgot Clairton is in the black hills. you think wash high has athletes? go to a clairton game. why dont you take a look at some of the mediocre schools recently that dropped from AA to A, none of them had any luck i dont think it would be any different for wash high

anon at 11:02 on 10/10...

thats funny. real funny. how did Fort Cherry do this past week? Oh yeah, they lost to Avella. Thats even funnier.

prexie said...

sorry i dont think clairton has any better athletes than wash high. they may be utilizing them better, and their system may be better, but bosnic just came in. their are kids on this team that were dunking basketballs in the 8th grade. there are 4 kids that played on a very good pony world series team 14yr olds and 3 of them will letter this year.i could put a 4x100relay team together from this team and challenge anyone. the problem they will have, as always, will be the big boys. a team still needs to block and tackle at the line.clairton always has the athletes but the high always got them also.

CLairton would beat Wash Hi by 4 TD's minimum. Clairton is for real, Wash Hi is a joke.

prexie said...

"wash high is a joke" why do people get childish when they send in a comment. we may never know what clairton and wash high would do if they played. the point is mute. im just saying the athletes are there. i guess laurel was a joke.

Joey Niklas said...

Wow these threads have funny twists. Suddenly it becomes Clairton vs Wash High. Both schools played in the past and both has beaten the other. If Wash High suddenly became a 1A school i'd think Wash High would be in the top 5 and Clairton would be favored by 3 TD's. As for how the game would play out. I have no idea. We can chatter about games but when the boys strap on the helmets its another story.

Anonymous said...

its funny, we were all told that fort cherry would beat clairton because they had a bunch of wrestlers. you're telling me wash high would beat clairton because they have good basketball and baseball players. HOW ABOUT FOOTBALL PLAYERS? Clairton has a wpial track champion on their team in coles who i believe won the 100 meter. why dont you come and watch a clairton game one friday night and see what type of athletes they have. the bears will be out your way this friday in burgettstown and next friday in avella, not that far from you.

Hey Prexie,

Just a little correction on your statement that Wash High was only 5students above the Class A cutoff. The fact is Wash High with an enrollment of 243 males has 48 more than Wilkensburg which has the largest male enrollment in Class A with 195. Also to the first post by anon, Clairton & Frazier are in the Black Hills because there was no other conference to place them in. Fayette County has only 2 A schools, Frazier & Geibel. Westmoreland County has Monessen and Jeannette which plays up to AA.
I believe Clairton & Serra Catholic are the only A programs in their section of Allegheny County. I guess the only way to get Clairton and Frazier out of the Black Hills and into the Tri-County South is to put Bentworth, Beth Center and California in the Black Hills. That might even the mix a bit.

It's cowardly to say a team is a joke under a anonymous name. Would you say that to anyones face in Washington? Well if not! Keep it to yourself! Yadda, Yadda, Yadda!

Anonymous said...

Maybe a little afraid of a little competition in Clairton? Huh anonymous?

Joey Niklas said...

Clairton isn't afraid of competition. If it was up to me Clairton would be playing 2A ball. I hope Clairton would never play a down of Tri County Ball. The only 1A conference I want to see Clairton in is the Big 7.

prexie said...

again i didnt say wash high would beat clairton. also i have no interest in watching clairton. i also hear clairton has got a good push up program. sorry i had to go there but please give it a rest.thats all i'll say on that subject.

Joey Niklas said...

I hear ya Prexie. All points are mute because the teams don't play each other. Its a fun topic needless to say. Too bad our teams can't play each other.

The big question surrounding CM is:

how long can they survive without Mike "Turtle D" Toward in their lineup? I understand he has scholarship offers in several sports already, but CM's staff needs to get this kid on the field. With his addition, they would certainly be a front-runner for the AAAA state championship.

Go Macs!

well clairton just finished home and home non-section games with monessen and laurel. They'll be looking for a couple of new non-section opponents next year. Lobby for a wash high/clairton game.
