The Peters Township boys basketball team looked impressive during its first round WPIAL Class AAAA playoff win over Penn-Trafford last Friday. The Indians rolled despite the absence of junior Corey Wilcox, arguably their best defensive player.
Seeing Wilcox sitting on the bench during the game conjured up visions of another defensive stopper in Peters Township's past. It's time to track the player down.
During the 1999-2000 season Peters Township was the top seed in the WPIAL Class AAAA bracket, just like this year's group. Offensively, that team was led by Eric Lang. Defensively, the Indians were led by Steve Daniele.
A dogged defender, Daniele could lock down a point guard, shooting guard or top scorer. He was the type of player coaches need to make postseason runs.

What year did Peters go Quad A and were they ever a Double A team?

They received the #1 seed in Quad A. They ran into a Penn Hills team that was about to erupt. Penn Hills had Division 1 talent all over their team and had a scorer named Drew Schifino who went on to lead the big east in scoring at WVU. All I can remember from being in the stands for that game was that Peters had controlled most of the game but Schifino was unstoppable in the final quarter. I belevie he scored over 40, with a box and one on him most of the game and had the game winning basket.
That Peters team was loaded with talent. They also had role players, defenders and scorers and extremely deep bench. I think Lulich who was the observer reporter player of the year the next year was a junior and came off the bench. They won the section beating out Uniontown who also had outstanding team. That team in my mind was one of the best around in the last decade.
U must be referring to Uniontown as the team of the decade. That team was really loaded.
They had 3 1,000 point scorers on that team with Terrance Vaugns, Chris Jacobs, and Dierre Jenkins.
Was that the team that was unstoppable until they ran into "the Duece"!
No it wasn't. The Deuce incident took place 10-15 years prior.
Wow! I'm getting old. I was at the game when Duece goofed the score.

"It brought back memories of the mid-1980s when Lawrence "Deuce" Skurcenski, serving as the official scorer, mistakenly credited a Farrell player with a basket instead of a Uniontown player during a famous high school playoff game at the Pitt Field House.
That mistake wasn't corrected and the two points decided the outcome.
Farrell won a game Uniontown should have won."
