Faust wins No. 500

In the feature game of Hoopfest at Trinity High School between Wash High and Trinity, the Prexies won 69-37 to give head coach Ron Faust his 500th career victory. Faust becomes just the second coach from Washington County to earn 500 wins. Phil Pergola, with Ringgold and currently California, is the other.

In Faust's 28 years, the Prexies have won 16 section titles, four WPIAL championships and two state titles (1984, 1986). Faust is in his final year as coach, teacher and athletic director at Wash High.

any thoughts on who could replace faust after this year???

Congratulations to coach Faust and the Prexies. He is a quality individual who brings out the best in his players. He will be missed after this season for sure. Possible replacement? I think Mike Maltony the current Wash High girls coach would be a worthy candidate.

Rather than speculate on the new coach, why not enjoy the 5-0 start?

Those familiar with Wash High know the policy - the school hires in-house if interested.

Congratulations to coach Faust, but this post is about Coach Pergola...Look at everything he has accomplished in his career...500+ wins, a state title for Ringgold in 1995 and also the wpial title in 1990 and a state runner-up trophy...Even with all the success, Pergola was basically forced out at Ringgold...Only Ringgold would force out one of the best coaches in the WPIAL!!!! I'm glad for Coach Pergola that he is having success at California...People might say he is only having success because he is coaching in single A, but he took California to the WPIAL finals, somewhere Ringgold will be no where near anytime soon...Another great move by the Ringgold School District!!!

Rodney Keith Taylor will likely apply for the job at Wash High. It would be a good stepping-stone job for him and also allow him to learn the head coaching ropes in a difficult section and classification. He is a known commodity in the Ringgold area and would definitely bring a lot to the table at Wash High. Plus, he has been schooled by some of the finest basketball minds in the area and if his work to this point means anything, he'd be a great coach for the Prexies! I think he could be the next Jon Miller (former Blackhawk coach).

Congrats to Coach Faust and the Prexies team. They look like they can have another solid season and send off Coach Faust on good note.

As for the job, Taylor can apply but like mike said, unless he teaches at washington he will not be hired. This has been the rule for quite some time. I also feel that the district would not be looking for a coach to use their school as a "stepping-stone." However, despite not being familar with the name, I wish him the best if he is hired and the best to anywhere else he may go.

It sure will be different watching a Prexie game without Faust on the sideline.

I believe Taylor is a teacher. So maybe he could apply there to teach.

Coach Pergola might have been a good coach when he won the WPIAL and State, but toward the end of his career it didnt seem like he was interested in coaching at Ringgold.

I think it was time to let him move on. He had some pretty decent teams at the end of his time with Ringgold he did absolutely nothing with.

I doubt Kellen Holmes would go to Geibel if Pergola was such a great coach.

Pergola is also approaching 500 losses as well. So lets not go overboard with him being a great coach.

Mike,
Wouldn't hiring in-house end up costing the Washington School District more money? I'm not too familiar with the collective bargaining agreements of the teacher's union, but I was under the impression that teachers get paid more to coach than an "outsider." Is this true? If so, given the financial problems Wash High has had, wouldn't it make sense for them to hire a non-district employee that was equally qualified so that they could save a few bucks?

With the new year coming up and this decade almost complete, I've started to think about an All-Decade team for Washington/Greene/Fayette Counties. My 5 Person team looks like this:

PG- Charles Murphy, Canon-Mac*
SG- Nick Wilcox, Peters
SF- Amber Harris, Wash High
PF- Andrew Sweat, Trinity
C- Emily Correal, Peters (better than any boy big man in the area this decade)
* denotes player of the decade

wow hoop scoop your list consists of players that have played within the past 3 years. Remember decade means 10 years, so please don't forget those who played in the early 2000's

hoop scoops...your list is a joke.

I do not know what it costs Wash High to hire coaches in-house as opposed to "outsiders."

hoop scoop... Ur list wouldnt even make a good honorable mention...

Why dont you just put the whole peters township team on there. I mean my god I could pick up better team with my eyes closed picking names out of a hat at random.

To keep the theme going and not to bash Hoop Scoop, here is another all-decade team.

Jock Wells, Washington
Christian Goetz, Burgettstown
Dan Davis, Fort Cherry
Brenden Cypher, Char-Houston
AJ Jackson, Monessen

6th man: Charles Murphy, Canon-Mac

Note: Ringgold fans, yes I left Troy Yonkers off of my all-decade team. I just feel that AJ Jackson was a much better player and athlete. That is why Yonkers didn't make it. Also, Murphy got my 6th man award because he played all 5 positions in high school and I can't think of another player in the last 30 years in this area that has done that.

That's a pretty good list B Free, one that tells me you follow the local scene more than just a team or two.

Goetz was clutch. His performance in the states a couple years ago, even though B'Town lost, was incredible.

Davis of Fort Cherry was easily the best player Wash Co. has had in terms of college potential. Too bad it didn't turn out the way many figured it would.

Let's not forget Eric Lang or Peters Twp. or Rick Cope of California and a list of guys from Wash High including Ramone Barnes, Ryan Moye and Colin Hennen.

Plus there was P.J. Schumacher of Waynesburg, Joe Testa of Trinity, Javon Hines and Paul Ruhmann of South Fayette.

Monessen's Brandon Jackson was also an excellent player.

And Beth-Center's Ryne Niemiec was offered a scholarship to Cal U for a reason.

Brandon Jackson and Matt Dent were both better than A.J. Jackson in high school. Anyone who actually played at Mo-Town will tell you that. A.J. developed alot more when he got to college.

lets stop with the beth center thing. Every time he played the high he was on lock down. All these guys in wash/greene county score all this points against subpar competition. Basketball as a whole in west penn is below average. Just look at all these so called d1's and great players. Only a few(1 hand) are doin anything significant on the college level. keep it real. iknow 7/8th graders that could put up 10-15 points against 80% of these varsity squads around here in wash cty.

Brandon Jackson should be on the list. The kid is better than everyone on the two lists put together. I dont even think Wilcox would score on Brandon Jackson if they played 1 on 1.

If anyone would have helped the kid out he would have played D-1 basketball instead of opting to play football for Cal U.

Jackson scored 20 plus points against Uniontown which was the number 1 team in the state in AAAA in 2002.

Eric Lang should be on the list as well if ur doing an all decade team.

hey mike you left out nate stoner 04-05 player of the year

Anonymous said...

Brandon Jackson would be the MVP of the decade hands down. There wasnt a player could guard him.

Anonymous said...

DJ Kennedy could guard Jackson, probably would shut him out too.

mike_kovak said...

Yep, I remember covering a game where Nate Stoner went toe-to-toe with Yough's Ben McCauley at Yough.

Anonymous said...

Last time I checked D.J. Kennedy played in the city league. So he wouldnt be included in our considerations. Nice try but buy a map for Christmas.

That had to be Nate Stoners best game of his life then if he hung with Ben McCauley.

I cant see Stoner playing for NC State...
