Week in Review, boys basketball (start of season through Dec. 18)

Team of the Week – South Fayette
No Christian Brumbaugh, no Josh Patterson, no Tanner Courtad and no Zach Challingsworth. No problem for the defending PIAA Class AA champions.

South Fayette is 3-0 with a trio of impressive wins over Fort Cherry, two-time defending WPIAL Class AA champion North Catholic and North County (Md.). The Lions, who made 18 three-pointers against North Catholic, are off until next Tuesday, when they play Rochester at the C.J. Betters Tournament in beaver County.

By that time, South Fayette should have its entire roster.

Runner-up – Monessen
The Greyhounds started the season 3-1 with the lone loss a 94-90 setback to Class AAAA Norwin.

Starting five
Nate Bellhy, Fort Cherry
Mike Lamberti, South Fayette
Jalen Madison, Monessen
Josh Valentic, Trinity
Pat Zedreck, South Fayette (pictured)
Sixth man
Josh Wise, Washington

1,000 points times three
– A trio of the area's top players each topped 1,000 career points already this season.

Last Monday, Bellhy and Zedreck each reached the milestone as the Lions rolled past the Rangers. Trinity's Valentic also hit the 1,000-point mark.

All three players are seniors.

Bits and pieces – Teams from Section 3-A are struggling to start the season. Preseason favorite Avella is 2-2 and the Eagles are the only team without a losing record. Bentworth has played five consecutive games against teams from Class AA and is 0-5. … Rodney Watkins, a 6-5 senior at Charleroi, made a rare start Friday night against Beth-Center and he dominated the game with 20 points as the Cougars won, 56-43. … At 3-0, Ringgold is off to one of its better starts in recent years. The Rams have beat West Allegheny, Yough and Belle Vernon, teams with a combined record of 2-11.

You should just rename you blog to "South Fayette Daily".... No one that actually lives in South Fayette even reads this man...Get over them already. Is that where you went to school?

Nope. Didn't attend South Fayette.

anonymous, they are in the coverage area... and no other team is doing in the area what they are with the exception of PT. there are other good teams around, but nobody else is bringing home the gold like those 2 programs at the moment. so why shouldn't they get a little more attention? I can at least admit that and i went to wash hi.

As a Ringgold follower, it is nice to see the boys team at 3-0 but when the teams they beat have a combined record of 2-11, it does temper the enthusiasm. I will wait and see until they play Trinity this Thursday at home - the Hillers are a good team - a good barometer of where this Rams team stands.

too bad for anyone who doesn't want to hear about sf all the time cause this year they may be better than last year. also that section is going to provide some good games with many teams trying to unseat the lions. good luck to all local teams this year especially the young prexies, i hope you grow up fast.on a side note i missed the ft cherry whs game and wow mr belhy, 40 pts. against my prexies. good luck to that young man.

it's funny that wash high fans are already praising south fayette knowing that they don't stand a chance.

how is wise the sixth man while Dylan Berger isn't even on the list. Berger is averaging over 20 ppg. Show some respect

you can still praise a team and root for your own team. also unfortunatly for fort cherry everyone threw air balls other than belhy and brown.its just a bad team. wash hi needs some shooters.

I agree Prexie.

It is possible to give a team praise, particularly one that has accomplished what South Fayette hoops has, while rooting for your own.

I think it's called respect.

i have thought south fayette has had a good program for quite a few years actually, i didn't just jump on their bandwagon since they won states. anyone who really follows high school sports has to appreciate teams who are always scrappy, year in and out and finally get to enjoy some real accomplishments like winning states or wpial and i praise them and respect them. unfortunately i can't say the same for some who use this blog to trash talk or be critical of others. to them i say grow up and even if you disagree, do it respectfully.
finally anon, your welcome to your opinion but just for you i say good years or bad years programs like wash high always feel like we have a chance against anyone. thats prexie tradition and we are proud of it
once again i say good luck to all local teams and go prexies
