WPIAL baseball season extended

The deadline for WPIAL baseball section games was scheduled for today with the playoff pairings to be announced Friday.

Instead, because so many teams have makeup games remaining, the WPIAL has extended baseball season to Sunday (Mother's Day) and will announce playoff pairings Monday. The playoffs will begin Tuesday.

This is a great case for Saturday scheduled games. For most of the spring Saturdays have had nicer weather than we have during the week. Is there a reason that we don't have Saturday games? It would make more sense to reschedule postponed games to the first open date, even if it is a Saturday than push them off with the possibility of more postponements.

Mike,
Why do the playoffs start so fast if they just find out on Monday who they play? Shouldn't the teams who make playoffs have more time to prepare and scout out their opponents ? Why should the stupidity of some teams scheduling affect the teams who got there games in??? If a team gets a bye when would they play?

Ok Mike so the season has been completed (for the most part).. What are your predictions in each class for top four seeds? Championship game? and a suprise team to keep an eye on?

With the season extended, does this mean Canon-McMillan still has a shot to make the playoffs? They're the best team in the state, they just need a couple of more days to put it all together.

The playoffs will likely get started Tuesday so they can make sure they get all the games in by the time the championships are played March 26-27 at Consol Energy Park.

Also, they want the semifinals completed 4-5 days before the championship games so each team can pitch their No. 1.

BTW, this is not just a Washington County blog though much of the discussion is within the borders.

Wash High as a sleeper? Really? What makes you think that? They have never been involved in any comments to this date. I know that they finished 2nd in their section but how have they flown under the radar so long?

Because they couldn't win a crappy section.

Anonymous said...

that is why I asked why they would be a sleeper?

Wash High should have won the section, they had to forfeit a game to Brownsville due to a 72 hour pitching rule that was overlooked by the coaches. Brownsville coaches knew what was going on, played the whole game and called the wpial that night. Washington had to forfeit. Washington beat them both times 13-6 and 7-0. Pretty embarrassing for them to be on top like that.

I think if pitching matchups fall in Wash High's favor, they can make a run in a classification that looks like a fairly even playing field.

As for calling Brownsville's section champions embarrassing, well rules are the rules. After what happened in the playoffs between North Hills and Peters Township a couple years ago, it's something every WPIAL baseball coach must know.

Let me get this straight, a coach didn't know the rules so they had to forfeit the game? And someone is upset that Brownsville "accepted" the win? Go ask the North Hills coach how that feels. Let me say this, that any coach would accept a forfeit victory. Especially a section or playoff game. So in my mind Brownsville shouldn't be embarrassed at all.
