Baseball schedule

While yours truly will be at Baldwin covering the massive WPIAL Class AAA and AA championship meets, there are some intriguing baseball playoff games to be played.

In Class AAA, 2008 WPIAL runner-up Trinity faces West Allegheny - the team it lost to in last year's title game. This year the tables are turned, however, as the Hillers are the higher seeded team and expected to advance deep into the postseason. First pitch is 4 p.m. at the Burkett Complex in Robinson Township.

Before the Trinity game, defending WPIAL Class A champion Carmichaels plays Monaca at 2 p.m. The Mikes had to feel good about putting up a nine-spot in their first-round win against Vincentian.

Also in Class A, Chartiers-Houston faces a difficult challenge in Rochester - last year's WPIAL runner-up. The Bucs can hit, but they'll also likely face Rams ace J.C. Figueiredo. At times, the 6-6 senior is dominant.

Avella, winners of four straight just to get into the WPIAL playoffs, beat Beth-Center 9-1 in the first round. The Eagles' reward is a quarterfinal matchup against top-seed Serra Catholic. Serra Catholic didn't play in the strongest of section, but the Eagles best West Allegheny (17-0) and South Park (10-3) this year.

Wow this is the first time in a long time that the AAAA section 3 did not produce even 1 semifinal team in the playoffs. I guess it is truly the year of the North as 3 teams from the same section are in the semis along with Kiski (which is kind of the North too).

The big kid from Rochester had a sore arm this year and barely pitched.
As it was, he looked largely disinterested in playing against C-H, particuarly in the field.

We had some execution mistakes," Alderson said. "But kids win games, coaches lose them, so I'll take this one."

What class. High School Coaches in every sport should follow this lead. This is someone that CH can & should be proud to have setting an example to their students.

I play for Trinity and our coach said the exact same quote. "Players win the game and coaches lose the game. I lost this game for you guys."

Trinity player, sorry to hear about the results of your game yesterday. Your coach is a class guy...he also said earlier this year that his dream job was coaching baseball at Trinity. You guys are lucky to have him. My coach is an idiot and ruined our team, I play for CM and it was tough this year. He never talk to us or seem like he knew what he was doing.

Mike,

I have noticed in the AA baseball bracket Serra Catholic and North Catholic are still winning, once again we go back to the subject of recruiting, just curious, do you have the answers to the following questions...

I know the sections and classes go by enrollment. I've noticed these Catholic and private schools fall into the AA section frequently or do they play up?

Who makes the decision to play up or stay in your conference?
