Pierpont to Winthrop

Matt Pierpont has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Division I Winthrop University, a member of the Big South Conference.
The starting shortstop and a pitcher for Canon-McMillan's 2008 PIAA Class AAAA championship team, Pierpont has one year remaining with the Big Macs.
A first-team selection to the Observer-Reporter All-District Baseball Team, Pierpont led Canon-McMillan in batting average (.471), on-base percentage (.562), slugging percentage (.694) and RBI (28).
In addition, he scored 29 times, hit 10 doubles and posted a 6-1 record with 50 strikeouts.
Pierpont, whose brother Gary is a senior pitcher at Duquesne University, chose Winthrop over Maryland, Ohio and the Dukes.

Matt Pierpont is a very good baseball player, but an even better person. I'm extremely happy for his achievement. Not to be greedy, but before he goes, bringing home another state championship would be much appreciated.

After noting that the last poster is a cowardly horse's ass for taking a shot at someone anonymously, I'd say there's probably a middle ground between Pierpont achieving everything on his own and achieving it solely because of the coaching he receives. A kid doesn't succeed without talent, nor without good direction from coaches.

Why are people always hating on the Canon-Mac baseball coaches? You would think they were the Pirates coaching staff and all of the people in the area had to suffer through 16 straight losing seasons with them. But the truth of the matter is that in two years Canon-McMillan has achieved many things that the program hadn't done in a long time and/or had never done at all.

In 2007, they managed to not only qualify for the playoffs but they then went out and knocked off a heavily favored Fox Chapel team in the first round (first playoff win for the school in over 20 years). Fox Chapel was the "IT" team of the 2007 playoffs as at least two area newspapers predicted they would be the sleeper team in the AAAA playoffs that year. In the 2nd round they gave an excellent Bethel Park team all they could handle before losing.

In 2008 as we all know by now, the Big Macs won the State Championship (first state title for their baseball program). All told, by my calculations the Big Macs have gone 35-14 in the last two seasons. That includes an 18-12 record in section play and a 7-2 postseason record. I think it is far to say that every school in the state would be thrilled to put up those kinds of numbers.

Is it all coaching? No. Is it all superior talent? No. It is a mix of both. The best part about this coaching staff is that they win the games they should (rarely ever lose to teams they are supposed to beat; USC in 2008 is the game that jumps out) and also win a lot of games they have no business winning. So give me this staff before any other in the Wpial. At least I know they will get their team to play hard, smart, and consistent. I'm tired of all of the talk about how coaches at Central Catholic (3 straight first round playoff exits even though they were a higher seed each time), Mt. Lebanon (missed the playoffs the last two years), Shaler (lost to CM in quarterfinals), and etc would be so much better for the Big Macs program.

I think Bucci et. al are the best staff for this group of kids. I have enjoyed having a chance to take pride in something in the CM community over these last two years and I owe it all to that baseball program (coaches and players).

I know Mike has warned posters in the past not to resort to name calling and not to ridicule coaches. Your comments are unwarranted and ridiculous. You only post those type of comments to get people angry and to start the childish name calling. It's a shame you have nothing better to do with your time. You will eventually ruin the ability to post anonymous on this blog with your silly antics.
Grow up and find a different blog to destroy.

Yeah i agree with moe!

Mike,
Like the one anon said, do you know the wherabouts of where the trinity kids are looking? becuase if they go D-1 or even D-2 we could have a lot of good local baseball players playing at the next level and this upcoming season could be very exciting like last years!

you say that like its expected for people to go D-I. i'd be surprised if those three will make it D-I. Pierpont on the other hand will.
