PIAA Boys Class AAA soccer final

Downington West (District 1) avenged its loss in the 2007 state championship by defeating Peters Township, 2-1, Saturday night at Hersheypark Stadium.

The Whippets scored early and it looked like they would score often, dominating the opening 25 minutes and scoring less than four minutes in on a goal by Travis Cantrell.

Indians goalkeeper Ryan Koepka kept his team in the game with a save on Chris Harmon's penalty kick 12 minutes into the second half, but Downington went ahead 2-0 on Joe Sales' goal with 23 minutes to play.

Nate Troscinski got the Indians on the board with a free kick goal three minutes later.

Peters Township, making its fifth appearance in the state title game, finished 20-6.

I find it idiotic to mock a team for losing in a state championship in the state's largest classification.

In addition, Downingtown West deserves the nation's No. 3 ranking in boys soccer. As someone who follows the sport, I feel comfortable in calling the Whippets the best high school soccer team I've seen.

How can you say you follow the sport. Ive been watching the paper all season. You have yet to print anything other than aaa ball, maybe you should open your eyes and see there are other teams locally that finished in the top 3 WPIAL playoffs and in the PIAA finals. Thats O.K. the pittsburgh papers will let the public know whats going on outside of Peters township.

umm this is a washington county blog so covering peters more than other wpial teams outside of washington county is kind of expected?

It seems kind of silly for the Observer-Reporter to cover a Fox Chapel-North Allegheny match since we don't sell newspapers in those areas.
