Postgame video from Peters Township and Woodland Hills coaches

It's one of the bigger stories to happen in the WPIAL this school year, a sucker-punch thrown by Woodland Hills' Shakim Alonzo, who happens to be a University of Cincinnati football recruit, that landed on the ear of Peters Township's Gabe Pritz.

Pritz needed 11 stitches to repair cartiledge damage to his ear, but he finished with 30 points, a double-double and six blocks as PT upset Woody high in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs at California University.

Observer-Reporter sports editor Chris Dugan, who actually covered the game, wrote a pair of outstanding pieces on the game and the incident. For his game story, click here. For a follow-up column, click here.

Alonzo is claiming a Peters Township player used a racial slur, which triggered his emotional eruption.

For postgame reaction, check out the video.

High school students suspended for Tebowing

Thanks to the won-loss record of Tim Tebow as a starting quarterback with the Denver Broncos, Tebowing - a tribute to the former Heisman Trophy winner - is currently a popular form of expression.

Before Tebow, Tebowing was usually referred to as kneeling and praying.

At a high school in New York, a group of students were recently suspended for Tebowing.

For video and a story, click here.

Not sure what to make of it. A suspension seems harsh, yet the student interviewed by ESPN who claims the students who Tebowed did so because of the quarterback's role-model qualities comes across as a little disingenuous.

Celebration costs team championship

Imagine, back in 2001, that Washington High School running back J.R. Ward raised his arm in triumph as he ran behind Dan Mozes to score what proved to be the game-winning touchdown in the PIAA Class AA championship game.

Not that Ward did, celebration displays were never a trademark of Prexies teams of that era.

But say Ward got flagged for the display and Pen Argyl won the state title.

Something like it happened recently in Massachusetts.

It's an interesting story.

It's tricky

Fort Cherry's Tanner Garry is one of the area's top senior football prospects, and one crafty fella when it comes to doing the unusual with a football and applying those skills to social media.

Check out this video that sure captivated my 2-year-old daughter Anna, who particularly enjoyed the playground footage. Myself, well, it's hard to top that sweet dancing at the end.

Ed Dalton Football

Trinity football coach Ed Dalton, one of the best at getting players to college and getting the names of his players known by colleges, recently set up a page on YouTube.com to showcase highlights from some of his top players, particularly seniors.

Here's a link to Mike Cleveland's highlight video:

For the link to the site, click

Dalton said he's willing to post video from any Washington County player on the site at no cost. Given Dalton's ability to generate publicity for players, it certainly is worth the time. Interested players or parents can contact Coach Dalton via email at eddalton.football@gmail.com.

Trinity gets bad news, Sweat a starter and more

Trinity senior Ty Billie will miss anywhere from two to six weeks with a leg injury suffered during the Hillers' opening scrimmage against Keystone Oaks.

Billie, a wide receiver and defensive back, hurt the leg when a teammate rolled on it on the final play of the scrimmage. Billie practiced last week and participated in Trinity's scrimmage against Uniontown.

Turns out Billie, who Dalton believes has Division I potential as a wide receiver, practiced and scrimmaged with a fractured bone in the leg. He will miss Trinity's season opening game at Canon-McMillan and, depending on the prognosis received Monday, could be out up to six weeks.

* I interviewed former Trinity standout Andrew Sweat Saturday evening for an upcoming story in the Observer-Reporter. A former O-R Athlete of the Year, Swear was named Ohio State's starting strong-side (SAM) linebacker for the Buckeyes' season opener against Marshall.

Ohio State is ranked No. 2 in the majority of preseason polls I've seen.

* The annual O-R Preseason Football Guide - all 72 glorious pages of it - will be published Tuesday. It includes previews on all high school football teams from the O-R coverage area in addition to the South Hills teams covered by the Almanac. Also, the guide features stories on the Steelers, Pitt, WVU, Penn State, Cal, W&J and Waynesburg.

This year's cover story includes South Fayette's Christian Brumbaugh and Peters Township's Austin Hancock and the rich tradition of quarterbacks from the region.

* I participated in my first fantasy football draft today. Anyone ever wonder if a high school fantasy football league would work? Anyone part of one?

If there was a league consisting of WPIAL players, the guess here is the No. 1 pick would be West Allegheny's Mike Caputo, maybe Hopewell's Rushel Shell.

If the league were confined to local teams, I'd take South Fayette's Jeff Davis or Charleroi's Quentin Briggs with the top pick.

* The following play defies description. It's high school football at its funniest.
