Week in review, Jan. 18-24

Boys Basketball
Team of the week
Monessen Greyhounds - Monessen went 4-0 with victories over California (75-31), South Fayette (83-70), Frazier (50-31) and Chartiers-Houston (87-62) with an average margin of victory at 25.2 points.

South Fayette entered the game undefeated and as the Observer-Reporter's No. 1 Class AA team.

Monessen (7-1 Section 5-AA, 10-3 overall) has won seven straight since Jaisen Irwin joined the team. Irwin has averaged 13.6 points.

Runner-up - Bentworth

Starting five
Josh Stepoli, Monessen
Nate Bellhy, Fort Cherry
Troy Wilson, Washington
John Barker, Bentworth
Tyler Pavan, Burgettstown
Off the bench
Kionte Davis, Canon-McMillan

Games of the week - Canon-McMillan beats Upper St. Clair, 61-57, Friday to move into a fourth-place tie in Section 4-AAAA; Waynesburg beats Elizabeth Forward, 68-66, Friday for its second consecutive win in Section 5-AAA.

Weird, wild stuff - Fort Cherry gave up 101 points to South Fayette, 93 to North Catholic and 91 to Carlynton in successive games. That's an average of 95 per game. The Rangers are allowing a WPIAL-worst 73.2 points per game.

Girls basketball
Team of the week
Fort Cherry Rangers - Fort Cherry went 4-0 with victories over Cornell (54-29), Burgettstown (47-40), Avella (44-26) and Serra Catholic (50-43). The Rangers (7-0, 11-3) are the only unbeaten team in Section 2-A play and hold a one-game lead in the standings over Serra.

Avella, Chartiers-Houston and Serra each average more points per game than Fort Cherry (48.4) but the Rangers are allowing just 37.1 points per game, best in the section and third-best in Class A to Carmichaels and Rochester.

Sophomore Beka Bellhy averaged 14.5 points per game last week.

Runner-up - Monessen

Starting five
Beka Bellhy, Fort Cherry
Emily Sweat, Trinity
Chelsea Evans, Washington
Kristina Wagner, California
Emily Hansen, Canon-McMillan
Off the bench
Mariah Ward, Monessen

Games of the week - Monessen beats California, 42-41, on Geena Shrader's last-second shot in Section 3-A; Washington holds off Charleroi in the fourth quarter for a 44-43 win in Section 5-AA.

Weird, wild stuff - C-M's Hansen has reached double figures in points in 12 of 14 games. Her teammates have scored in double figures a combined seven times.

kovak what is with your lack of coverage of peters basketball

I think Mike's done a great job of covering PT.

62-4 chartiers houston over aquinas academy..shows how much class the kids over chartiers houston have..Maybe they took there frustration out on aquinas because chartiers can't beat teams that are a challenge to them...Very disrespectful on there part, no class, I can understand still playing but to beat a team like that is disgusting and they should be ashamed..just goes to show how much class they have at that school and if there so good they would beat the good teams in there section.

They arent good, so why give them media coverage.

I love how the PG keeps scooping the OR Sports team in regards to Dylan Bongiorni's transfer.
It has been mentioned three times in print compared to the OR's none.
Perhaps next week we will get some info.

lack of coverage? they are a below average team...what would you like the man to cover...how bad they are?

Mike,

As a fairly avid reader of your blog, I must say I really like this week in review post and I hope you continue it.

I wrote a season preview on Peters Township and covered the Indians game against Washington. The O-R also staffed a recent game between PT and Canon-McMillan.

Hopefully, I get a chance to see PT again as I am not of the belief that it is a below-average team.

Wish I would have thought of the Week in Review earlier.

Peters is a good team. They have no size, that's what's killing them. Their record is a direct result of playing a killer schedule. Find me a team that plays harder than them. Based on talent, they shouldn't win 10 games but they are in 2nd place.

Below average team...and you're probably a Canon-Mac fan (who PT pounded).

Since the last Wasington game Monessen has been playing like a WPIAL Title contender. They play hard and tough defense and I feel that they are a top team in double A. What do you think Mike?

mike_kovak said...

Agreed anon 9:48 a.m.

Monessen is playing unselfish basketball. As long as the Greyhounds stay disciplined on defense, a postseason run is highly possible.

Mike,

Where did Jaisen Irwin come from and why did his old school sign off on his departure?

Anonymous said...

Anon 6:28 p.m.,

Jaisen Irwin did not come from anywhere. He has been at Monessen and was playing JV ball only during the first 6 games of the season. He finally began to dress (and play) varsity after T Stepoli quit at the Wash High game. He averaged 20ppg for the 8th and 9th grade team last year...Needless to say, he should have been seeing Varsity action from the very beginning.

Sarcastic Sword said...

It seems like the departure of Stepoli was addition by subtraction for the Greyhounds....Playing team ball - fundamentals, etc....Some kids who grow up playing street ball can never get rid of that attitude.......

Im pretty sure that GCC wont be putting up with that crap either....

I know first hand Irwin was at California (PA) when he was in Middle School. He was a stud then.

Over the summer, he was the best player in the Bud Grebb Summer League at California. I said he was going to be a main guy at Monessen, but others told me he wouldnt even play that much. Irwin has springs in his legs. He is a legitmate jumper. He is a real talent. That just shows you how much talent Monessen has. I think he is only a Soph too.

PT is an average team. Monessan is really good and has been for years. They have down years but they let Sal coach and leave him alone. From what I hear that's not happening at PT. There guy will be gone because there administration, especially the principal, are meddlers. When that happens than youll have a story Kovak.

Irwin is an Athletic freak he can hit an open jumper and rebound great. I seen Monessen practice he plays hard and he threw down some dunks I never seen a High School kid do standing 5'11". He is just what Monessen needed.

Anonymous said...

You must have never been to a wash high middle or jv game, we have a 8th grader who's about 5"11 that can dunk!!! SERIOUSLY!!!

Anonymous said...

I have been to the Wash High Monessen JV game and I remember Jason Having 5 dunks...

wash high has kids 5'6'' to 5'8'' grabbing the rim and they dont play basketball. cant wait to see what their track team does with some of the names i've heard will run this year.

Jaisen Irwin is the brother of Monessen track standout Tarrelle Irwin, who became the first athlete from the school to win a PIAA track gold medal last year.
