Boys basketball, week in review

Team of the Week – Avella
The Eagles remained one game behind Section 3-A leader Bentworth, but it wasn't without one wild comeback at home against Carmichaels.
One day after Avella (5-1 section, 9-7 overall) – the only team in 3-A with a winning record – dispatched Mapletown, the Mikes forced overtime when Seth Krall hit a three-pointer with six seconds remaining.
Carmichaels got 26 points apiece from Jonathan Krall and Seth Krall and the Mikes surged to an eight-point lead in overtime.
Avella rallied in the final 90 seconds and took the lead for good an a Damon Cupp layup with 18 seconds remaining. A pair of free throws from Cameron Geresti iced the game.

Runner-up – Ringgold
The Rams solidified their playoff position in Section 5-AAA with a pair of wins; the first over Waynesburg and the second at Washington Friday night. Andrew Stine scored a combined 66 points in the two games, including a school record 42 against Waynesburg.

Starting five
Jonathan Krall, Carmichaels
Tyler Pavan, Burgettstown
Andrew Stine, Ringgold
John Tyler, California
Josh Valentic, Trinity
Off the bench
Tyler Corbitt, Charleroi

Pavan-ing the way – As Burgettstown clings to fourth place in Section 5-AA, there's little doubt the Blue Devils playoff chances rest on the scoring touch of Pavan, a senior guard who is nearing 1,000 career points.
Pavan, an all-section selection last year, has been on an offensive tear since a one-point loss to Washington. Over his last six games, Pavan is averaging 27.2 points per game. He is averaging 21.5 points on the season.

Only way Ringgold wins Friday against South Fayette is if they play as a team. PASS THE BALL TO THE OPEN GUY RAMS. ENOUGH OF THE SELFISHNESS.

I've watched Ringgold play a couple times this year and didn't think it played a selfish game.

The ft cherry- burgettstown game last night was one of the best highschool games I have seen in wash co in a long time .From the coaching adjustments by burgettstown, to The students who were out in full force cheering their teams. The burgettstowns band was there playing, yes at a basketball game, both schools students dressed in school colors,a near sell out croud, and the game came down to the last shot with 3 seconds to go,with a match up of two of the top players in the county. it was great to see. Most impressive was when a player from burgettstown was injured and had to be taken by ambulance and when the game was on hold due to the injury both teams met at center court and prayed. We live in a crazy world, but if the players last night are part of our future there is still hope. From a student participation stand point it was tops.

We were told the Burgettstown player (Eric Hutchinson) was flown to Children's Hospital last night after losing feeling in his legs.

That was all the information we were able to collect last night.

I agree the game was very exciting to watch. The refs seemed to be a little biased towards the end though.

Could not understand why the ref would call a technical foul on the FC coach for trying to call a time out.
With a close game like that the refs should not interfere with the outcome of a game by calling a technical with :19 seconds left.
what did their coach do?
does anybody know?
Also, fouls were 12-5 against FC for the second half. Not a well refereed game.
The FC players went to BT's bench to go say a prayer at mid-court. Very classy. Good kids.

Why is it always the refs when you lose? The fact is I was at the game and the refs bent over backward not to call a foul on Belhy, he charged a burgettstown player so hard the kid left by ambulance yet NO FOUL.Also any ref with self respect would have called 3-4 technicals on the ft cherry coach for the way he conducted himself.Lose with class

I was at the game too and I feel bad that the player got hurt but he wasn't charged. When the FC player threw a behind the back pass the Burgettstown player twisted and fell, the FC player then tripped over the Burgettstown player who was on the floor. I hope he is alright.
