Back from vacation

Greetings readers.
It's been a week since I last posted as I spent a few sun-drenched days soaking up the rays on the Mexico island of Cozumel.

I'll be spending the next few hours getting back up to speed with local sports happenings and will kick start the blog.

Mike,
I hope you are covering next week's track championship at West Mifflin. Based on this morning's article your coworker just doesn't get the difference between team track (15 events plus one relay, athletes spread out for points and only running fast enough to get those points) and individual track(athletes going all out in an event or two). Yesterday's team competitions are absolutely no indicator of who will shine in individual qualifiers....many top individuals aren't on teams that get in the playoff and many of the 2nd, 3rd place scorers in ateam competition aren't able to make the individual finals.

I'm not sure of next week's assignments but I do usually cover the individual track qualifier at West Mifflin. That assignement is usually more of a feature story on an athlete doing well.

I'll be checking into the Ringgold and C-M searches within the next couple days.

The WPIAL Track team tournament is silly. Waynesburg and Wash High did smart in not killing their kids to try to win. I think the WPIAL is the only district in the state that doesn't award team titles at their district championships through points scored at a meet that determines the top 8 in the WPIAL and who goes to states.

The thing about team titles at district championships is that the only athletes competing for the team are the ones who were able to qualify individually so most of the team is left at home.
A few years back one girl won 4 events at the state meet and her school received the team championship.
Sometimes track is it's own worst enemy pr wise due to some of the rules in effect.

"The WPIAL Track team tournament is silly. "

Finally, someone on this blog wrote something that is right on. Team track is stupid. Just plain stupid. With what happened this week, it's obvious the teams don't even care.

I guess you weren't at the Canon-Mac playoff meet vs NA,West A, Hampton, and Uniotown.
A bus load of young men stepping up against top competition, cheering for one another, and stepping out of comfort zones to do events for the good of the team.
CM track cares.
That doesn't make as good a story as guys on a band trip.Hope they didn't fly with that starting block. :)

Team track ... zzzzzzzzzzzz.

An event for squads without athletes who can actually place at the state meet.

Hey CM, when was your last gold at the big meet?

5/8 anon Based on your comment your an all-american in another sport who thinks he is to good for track! The answer to the question is many, J.Mathews MVP Baldwin Invite state medal winner,Z Zebrasky WPIAL Champ and record holder in Jav state medal winner just a couple off the top! And as a person who follows HS sports in this area you have not done better!!

Add to that CM list Denia Mathews WPIAL hurdle champ, Several long/triple jump champs, Chelsea Zahn state medalist in Discus last year, Kyle Gibson 5th in 3200 two years ago,Matt Gregory WPIAL champ and all-state in distance, etc. etc.

And this season's WPIAL Individuals are about to be determined.

ZZZZanon you are right, no individuals to speak of.
