Monessen-Laurel ending

In a game that's sure to be talked about in Monessen and Laurel (New Castle) for years, the Spartans beat the Greyhounds Saturday on a last-second shot in the WPIAL Class AA preliminary round at West Allegheny.

Monessen led by one point, 44-43, and was inbounding the basketball underneath its own basket with 0.6 seconds left. The ball is stolen by Laurel's Mike Natale, who somehow tossed in the game-winner in time (or not) before the buzzer sounded. Monessen, however, missed both free throws after Laurel committed an intentional foul moments earlier.

And justice wins. It could not have happened to a more deserving group of coaches or players.

True payback for all the unsportsmenship they have shown over the years

Wow real classy my man..u must be one of the 2 brothers that quit the team this year lol!

You don't throw the ball anywhere near your own basket in that situation. Toss the ball to midcourt.

you people really know how to talk. Who do you think you are talking about high school kids. 15 to 18 year old kids this isn't the nba this isn't college they are kids and i am one of those kids. I am also from Monessen and I don't appreciate reading this. You people need to grow up and start worrying about more important things going on in this world then making your self feel good by talking about kids and a high school. And I have played against and seen a lot more schools who are not good sports at all. That's all I'm going to say for right now.

The only way to get off a shot in .6 seconds is to tip it. I was not there, but I would be very surprised if a steal and a shot could happen in .6 sec. Like em or loath them, I think the Greyhounds got ripped off.

I agree 100% with Mr Lolley......

This is all on Salvino......If you watch the play, the two Monessen players on the side of the ball never moved...On the other side where the pass went, the one Monessen player never even tried to set a screen for the player who the pass was intended for.....What a horrible end of game play...It galls me when kids bust their tails and lose because of inept coaching strategy.....

The clock operator or referee was obviously slow...the clock operator takes his cue from the ref..someone was napping....But this sitauation si totally avoided by just throwing to mid-court - someone touches the ball and the buzzer sounds....

I have no connection to Monessen so I ask this because I dont know....Is Salvino a motivator-type of coach and is weak with X's and O's because his decision reeks of someone that has no clue what he had to do and this guy has been around 20 yrs....

what happen was that coach Salvino did say to throw the ball to mid court but the in bounder panicked. You get nervous in those situations and that's what happened. Keep in mind also Monessen is a very young team only on senior. No leadership and experience. The coach can only say what is the best thing to do but when you get nervous and the game is on the line bad things happen to a young team.

monessen high school anon...my advice to you is to quit reading blogs and the internet if you cant handle the criticism. Because of the internet, sites like this, espn covering high school games, sports illustrated, local news and newspapers, etc, high school sports has become just as big on a local level as college sports. Its going to be talked about and discussed. If that was the coach's decision to run that play at the end of the game his position should be opened. If it was a bad play by a player then so be it...but you have to expect it to be critiqued...high school player or not. And because of the negative press your team/school receives as well as their actions on the football field and basketball court you have to expect this type of response. If you dont like it step up on your team, be a leader, and tell your teammates to knock this crap off.

Tell me what my team mates did because that's what I'm missing? Im out there on that field and believe i know what goes on. When are kids get racial slurs and late hits etc..I think we do a pretty good job. I'm not saying we are the best sports but we sure aren't the worst. I'm also pretty sure you wouldn't get 14 about to be 15 NFL players from one school over 600 wins in football and how many years in the row we made playoffs in hoop if we were either. Because teams like that don't win and kids like that don't go pro. Yes we do have kids that do have discipline issues but doesn't every team?

Anon 3:27 and can I ask where you are from?

If Salvino said the plan was to throw the ball to mid-court, not one of his players broke to that spot..So we are to believe that coming out of a timeout, the inbounds passer did not look to mid-court and none of the other four players broke to mid-court and we are to believe a coach on something that not one of his players tried to execute.....Sounds fishy to me...

Your teams fault or not, the images of your players and fans fighting each other and the police a few weeks ago doesnt cast your team or your community in any type of positive light. And I know you are going to tell me it wasnt your fault...but I clearly remember the image of two of your basketball players arguing and then one pushing the other in the middle of all of that junk that was going on...it was caught on tape. Also, the train wreck that was the Terrance Stepoli saga on your basketball team didnt help matters, it just added to the legend that is monessen. And then when the other one also transferred to GCC it almost became laughable. But lets just say I have seen enough Monessen football games to watch your players quit on your coach...to watch the fighting on the sidelines among players...to watch all the personal fouls you guys take because of how undisciplined you are...watching stepoli getting ejected from the Clairton game at EF a couple of years ago for throwing punches at the Clairton kids while Clairton was beating you silly for the second time in the same season...its just one thing after another with you guys.

Sarcastic Sword watch 15 set the pick at the top of the key he then starts to break down court BUT the inbounder did not give him enough time to do so watch the video again...It was actually a great play but the inbounder is at fault not coach Salvino

Oh really because im pretty sure other teams have fights between their players and the only reason Josh got mad at the Wash High game was because some guy from Washington attacked his sister and one of our players was holding him back thats the only thing that happened that game was blown way out of praportion I was there. And the Stepoli kids mom made them transfer not them. I also been to A LOT of Monessen games and I think I remember only one player quiting, and yes we did get blown out by Clairton but they are a great team and im pretty sure clairton threw punches too. So its not just us im sure your H.S. you follow isnt perfect by any means.

Ha ha ha. Typical response. Blame everyone else, dont take any responsibility. Blame the media for blowing it out of proportion, blame stepoli's mom, blame Clairton, accuse other teams and kids of doing the same thing. Typical.

Listen you take monessen name out and put somebody elses what would you people say then. Look I hate monessen just as bad as the next person but that is because i grew up with them as a rival the game is suppose to be fair not based on past actions if this was any other school you people be talkin about why there was not an appeal monessen won that game. i think most of you just dont want monessen in the playoffs because you know what they can do they are my rival and even I know this is wrong those "kids" were not apart of the fight we have this deviant mark on monessen so when something happens they are wrong and the other team is the victim its just not fair I know that senior on there team great kid how do you think he feels. Those kids coaches of monessen are people just like you ha just a little bit more athletic

I did watch the video again....you are right....#15 did make a weak attempt at a screen.....His teammate was not open because the screen wasnt a good one because it wasnt set on the correct side of the Laurel player....All this does is prove my point that Salvino was giving the Valley Independent a line of B.S that he told his team to throw the ball to mid-ct...

....Why would his team be trying to set a screen if the plan was to go to mid-court?

Anonymous said...

You may hate Monessen but noone can watch that clip and think the call was correct. It has been timed and it takes 1.5 seconds to do what he did. He did not get the ball off in .06 seconds. Instead of debating if the inbounder was told what to do discuss the incompetant referee's that actually think you can grab a ball, bounce the ball and then shoot it in 0.6 seconds. Their lack of basketball knowledge is horrific.

Secondly, these boys have gone through so much this past year with the Stepoli drama and have worked hard to keep this team together. Instead of talking crap on the boys that stayed with the Greyhounds you should compliment them for not quitting on their teammates and coaches. There are a lot of very good kids on this team.

Let's cut to the chase on this mockery you Sarcastic Swords and bitter Monesses kids are making. I am the "clock operator" as they call it. I screwed Monessen. I am responsible. Blame me. I froze in the final 0.6 seconds and delayed the start of the clock. I couldn't see the Monessen kids do it again. They didn't deserve this. Laurel did. Better watch out for me. I'll be working a clock this weekend at a high school near you...

Please tell me who wrote this immature comment? I hope it is a child. Justice wins?

My son plays on this basketbsll team, he works hard in practice and in games, he has never been suspended, he has never received a "C" on his report card in his life and he is a good kid. Justice wins? He or the teammates that are on the floor with him now have never been part of any problems yet you put them down...i find this comment from you to be a heartbreaking one...I give kudo's to every kid that stuck with the team and hope for nothing but success years ahead. These kid had nothing to do with any fights you may have seen on TV or any fights in the past, so when you put a kid down, remember their Momma is reading it-little boy... Justice wins..I think not!!!!!

I was at the game. The WPIAL needs to step up to the plate and admit an erorr was made. In .6 seconds there was no way that basket was good. When u lose you lose but to get knocked off in that fashion is a shame. Monessen won that game....

Anonymous said...

Coach Salvino his team the inbounder...Not at fault at all...The WPIAL and the reffs they are at fault..Step up and correct this mess and admit an error was made on their part..Make this wrong a right. That is ur job. Wondering if they have children playing sports..Do they realize how important this is to that whole team? The inbounder ...would u want ur son to carry that on his shoulders? A mistake and then to lose unjustly? Time for The WPIAL to do the right thing! Is that not their job? I f they cant then time for a change in that organization..Think about the kids not urselves...

Anonymous said...

WPIAL What are you going to do? I could only hope you bring justice to the Monessen BasketBall Team.. If not you have all failed in your job, What a shame that would be.Anyone who looked at that tape can very clearly see the truth. REALLY...

I think everyone here would agree that there is no way that shot should have counted. That said, the officials said it did and thats that. Everyone that reads this blog, at one point or another, has had an official make a TERRIBLE call against their team...and of those calls some of them have cost teams games...most recently charleroi v washington in football. Unfortunately, there are no do-overs. When have you EVER seen a game replayed or continued because of a bad call? Never. It NEVER happens. You can protest...but what good does that do? The truth is the game, and unfortunately your season, is over. And I'm not saying that in a derogatory tone...im just facing facts. You guys need to do the same. The WPIAL isnt going to do a thing about this. Sorry...

Anonymous said...

In response to the last comment I agree to a point. But the WPIAL can at least admit an error was made. Monessen deserves at least that...Seeing they got knocked out unjustly....
