Take notice area Steelers fans: Not only are the Cleveland Browns a trendy pick to win the AFC North, there's a chance a local product may impact the division.
Travis Thomas, a former Notre Dame running back and the 2002 Observer-Reporter Co-Offensive Player of the Year, is receiving rave reviews for his work in the Browns backfield.
According to reports, Thomas is vying for a spot on the practice squad. His main competition is former Penn State runner Austin Scott.
Next time you're on Google.com, do a news search for Travis Thomas. The Cleveland Plain Dealer has nothing but nice things to say about the former Prexies standout.

From Notre Dame to Cleveland, it's a shame i have to keep hating him...
Jamal Lewis is a monster, but behind him is no clear cut backup. Jason Wright, a Northwestern product(now home to cm's Jeravin Matthews) filled in a little last year but is far from a dependable backup runner. He had his career season last year with 60 carries and just over 275 yards both of which were second on the Browns behind Lewis. I think Thomas has a legit shot at making the team considering the Browns lack of RB depth and his ability to play special teams. If i am not mistaken he played linebacker for a year and was special teams captain while at ND...
Not to pee on anybody's Cheerios, but if he was doing that great, he'd be vying for a spot on the actual roster, not the taxi squad.
typically undrafted rookies compete for positions on practice squads... Very rarely do you hear of an undrafted rookie looking to be the starting tailback on a team that had a guy run for 1300+yrds. Once on the practice squad, there is a chance for a promotion to the actual roster, after of course a period of time that allows the player to prove himself.

Hey, it's quite an achievement for a guy from our little area to make an NFL team. I'm not dissing the guy. I'm just suggesting that we shouldn't be getting all het up about him making a taxi squad. While there are notable exceptions, undrafted rookies usually don't have long careers, so I hope he prepared himself well at ND for life after football. At least Thomas has made the most of his athletic gifts and taken advantage of the opportunities provided to him. Wash High has produced some great running backs - Brian Davis and Keith Malone come to mind - who didn't.
Can't agree with you on this one Brant. It's quite difficult making a NFL roster, and I know I'd be quite happy being on any team's taxi squad.
Plus, I don't believe people are getting caught up in it. Just congratulating a nice guy on trying to make it.
And, yes, Travis certainly has a good head on his shoulders. A great student at ND with some impressive internships to put on his resume, Travis will be fine when his playing days end.
