Those wishing for a Monessen vs. Greensburg Central Catholic matchup in the WPIAL Class AA boys basketball championship game may still get their wish but one of the main subplots to the story line was erased when the Stepoli brothers left the GCC basketball team to reportedly
concentrate on football.
Terrance Stepoli, a senior, transferred from Monessen to Greensburg Central Catholic midway through the 2009-10 basketball season, not long after the Greyhounds lost at Wash High. Josh Stepoli, a junior, remained at Monessen until a few weeks later. Josh Stepoli was still with the Greyhounds when a few fans from Monessen and Washington fought during halftime of the second game played between the two teams last year.
According to the story from the Tribune-Review, which you can read here http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/s_719855.html, Terrance Stepoli is expected to accept a football scholarship from Division II Concord (W.Va.) University. Josh Stepoli is a big-time football prospect with schools from Rutgers to Nebraska interested in the 6-7 lineman.
Both Stepolis were key contributors to a GCC team that was bolstered by several transfers and spent the entire season atop the Observer-Reporter Class AA rankings. The Centurions are 14-2 overall after beating California Tuesday night.

Good choice on their part. If they are going to play football they should concentrate on football. Why risk injury in basketball?
Is this really a suprise that the Stepoli brothers quit??? I wouldnt be suprised to see them quit the football teams they play for in college.
The basketball season is over in 4-5 weeks at this point is 4-5 weeks going to make that much of a difference. Walking out on the team in the middle of a championship run showes their true maturity. Not suprised
This is not a good choice. If you start something you better finish it, its part of being a man.
Unfortunately, this isn't about "being a man." It is entirely about "being a star."
diringl
hmmmmmm. now let me understand this,
these brothers who left mon. to play for gcc quit the team which has or had a good shot of winning wpial or maybe even states to spend more time lifting weights and to avoid injury so they can play football in college.
something doesn't add up there. i would have to say that playing hoops is probably good for conditioning and building up leg muscles. plus playing for a team that is going to make a long run into the playoffs would give a kid a lot of exposure to help being recruited. and lifting weights can be done at all hours of the day so I JUST DON'T GET IT.
More info. is needed for me to understand or maybe i don't want to. good luck to the stepoli boys i hope it works out for them.
This is a crap excuse for why they quit. Basketball will be over in a month..you mean that month of 'lifting' is going to make any difference? How much lifting do you need to play for Concord :)
My writing must intimidate you. You decided not to post my last thought.
They didnt "quit" to concentrate on football..The GCC head coach is taking the high road.
The same attitude (anger and selfishness) that marked their Monessen career was never going away - that is who these kids are - so no one whould be suprised how this ended up.
