Trinity to open Dalton's position; Bentworth hires football coach
The Trinity Area School Board will open the head varsity football coaching position held by Ed Dalton.
Dalton, who has coached football at Trinity since 1999, was informed Tuesday by athletic director Bobby Jones of the action.
The Hillers went 5-4 this fall, and finished tied with Chartiers Valley and Belle Vernon for third place in the Big Eight Conference but missed the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs via head-to-head tiebreakers with both teams. It snapped a six-year playoff streak for Trinity.
For more information, please read Thursday's Observer-Reporter.
* Bentworth didn't wait long to fill its vacant football position.
Less than three weeks after Lou Rood resigned following three difficult seasons, the school district hired Bob Niziol as its varsity football coach. Niziol served as one of Rood's assistants and works in the school district.

Really sad! As i was driving home the other night, i was listening to an interview with Bobby Knight. He said his first job at West point the General asked him "son do you care if people like you" and he responded I'm not sure. The General then said that if your going to be a successful coach, then you shouldn't care if everyone likes you. My point is not everybody likes Ed @ Trinity nor any other coach at any other school, college, NFL or Midget league either.but you have to look at the totality of the situation. Where you were, and where your at. Trinity is in a far better football place now versus when he took over. Mind you he even got you a game on national tv a couple years ago and brought some much needed relevance to the program. Alot of schools would like to have a guy who devotes as much energy to his program and players as he does. Furthermore, he helps the kids continue on into college. That is what its really about anyways. Just saying!
The job that needs to open up is in Monessen. The people of Monessen want a winning program outside of the T.C.S. and deserve a coach that will go above and beyond to make the team successful. The current coach (A.P.) is an embarrassment to the game and our town. His players don't even respect him, let alone the parents. We need to get to the board meetings and tell them how we feel! Come on people, let your voice be heard.
This has been the same deal the last couple years. This man must really love Trinity football to take the doodoo he gets from the administration. I would have been gone. He can go somewhere and make them a winner, much like he has done at Trinity. As a Ringgold fan, I am always afraid to go against Trinity, because he always finds a way to beat us.
@Keith...
About Dalton beating the Rams...Its just not him....Good coaches do that to the Rams.
@ Sarcastic Sword....
First home playoff victory since 1987 and first playoff win since 1999....those boys are 17-4 the past 2 seasons...wins over Botta, Cavanaugh, Barton, Ledonne and others in that span....those coaches have been around a long time and Matt Humbert and his staff have beaten them....you are just a jealous, repugnant individual who always has something negative to say....why don't you apply when the job opens or stop by the football office this winter and hash it out with some of the coaches if you have so many great ideas!!!
Mr. Kelley and Mr. Taylor. Thank you. I couldn't have said it any better. These board members act like they're the experts on athletics. If it was about everyone liking you, they would not be on the board. The select few are probably the most hated people in our district. It makes me sick and turns my stomach to watch what they are doing to our school.
You know what, I have to agree with Sword..Humbert got the job by default.. The Price situation put the school board in a bind and they were forced to make that decision. If he would have had to apply to a open position and wasn't already on the staff, he wouldn't have had a chance at being the head coach. He didn't even get the Bentworth position. That said, he lucked out and moved into the program that was blessed with athletes the past two years. Anyone that has seen a Rams game in the past 2 years can agree, If that offense didn't score on broken plays with athletes being "athletic", then they don't do nearly as good. ANYBODY could coach that team to a good conference record...The next two years will define Humbert's coaching ability because now, he might actually have to have a game plan and be a...coach. How can YOU disagree
It really sounds like there are some personal agendas in a couple of these posts.
I think there are several positives in Ringgold's situation. Besides the W-L record, Humbert brought some much-needed coaching stability. Let's remember, this was a job few wanted, and the few that did often ran away or quickly got the axe.
As for talent, that's a key ingredient to winning.
Let Jim Render coach at Mapletown the last 24 years like George Messich. Anyone else think he has 300 wins?
This thread should be kept to Dalton discussion. No need for needless bashing to satisfy a personal agenda.
I just hope Dalton goes where he is wanted. The Trinity community wants this man. I don't understand why the administration doesn't.
