Wilcox is good, Frey is better
ReplyDeleteOk, loser. Give some facts. Compare Wilcox's team and individual stats to anyone in Washington County and then make your case.
ReplyDeleteUntil then continue to spew your stupidity.
Nick Wilcox is the best all-around basketball player to play in Washington County in a long time! He won a WPIAL, he dominated supposed "more athletic" players and he is a great kid. I'd take Wilcox over anyone I've seen in Wash County is quite a while. He's a winner, and that speaks volumes.
ReplyDeleteno disrespect intended if he is that good why is he going to bethany
ReplyDeleteHe's white and he's short. Those guys play d-iii.
ReplyDeleteAlex Pihakis and Zach Fettig should have been candidates for athlete of the year. Not saying they should have won it, but they should have made the final cut.
ReplyDeleteWilcox is okay. There are a lot of better players in Washington County Basketball speaking. Lets leave that alone. congrats to the kid but my vote was for Lapkowicz...the best overall athlete around in three sports basketball, football and baseball. no question! And also he is playing Division II baseball at Slippery Rock. He deserved better and got left out because his teams didn't have the talent.
ReplyDeletePoint made on Bethany...I spoke to several college coaches about the kid and they just kept asking about the Wolcott kid.(point guard)Peters had the best overall team around no question. But not the best players.
ReplyDeleteWilcox is going to Bethany. So what. There are choices each of us makes in life and if D-3 is what is best for him then so be it. Not everyone is out for fame and glory in sports. Did anyone consider that? He is a hard nosed competitor and he will be joined by a few more talented freshmen at Bethany. As far as him be AOY, let it go. Congrats to him.
ReplyDeleteWas Lapkowicz All-State in 2 sports, did he win a WPIAL title in two, and do it all in the highest classification? I know nothing about him, just asking. I'm going to make the assumption that he didn't do those things, that's probably why Wilcox deserved it over him.
ReplyDeleteThe person questioning Lapkowicz credentials. Full athletic scholarship. 2 wpial titles 1 state title. FIRST team all area Pittsburgh Post gazette. Two time first team Observer reporter. And this is just baseball.I left out the state team and other recognition. We will leave out football and basketball for now. This young man produced for four straight years.
ReplyDeleteJust read the Post Gazette All Area baseball team. Lapkowicz was on it.
ReplyDeleteIts not fame and glory its the right to get an education for FREE!!!!
ReplyDeletefrey argument was given numerous d2 scholarship offers and at least 1 d1 scholarship besides ysu deal. section player of the year baseball, all star game mvp baseball, all conference football both offense and defense, all star game mvp, starter basketball, 19 points in washington county all star game. also had numerous football scholarship offers...there is your winner
ReplyDeleteFrey is solid.
ReplyDeleteYou never heard of Lapkowicz, where were you, this is the kid who had major surgury due to a severe ankle injury in the semi-states of baseball last year and was told there was a chance he wouln,t play anything again, He came back and played all three sports. He was also the w.p.i.a.l scholar athlete and tri-county scholar athlete.yea all state and a w.p.i.a.l winner too. Yea you have to have a great team to go far in a team sport, one person can't do it all. Knowing the kid I seriously doubt if he cares if he's athlete of the year-He was the there for the fun of it.
ReplyDeleteWilcox won state titles, WPIAL titles and individual All State titles at the HIGHEST level of competition. He took a basketball program that was a joke when he was a freshman to the first WPIAL title in its history.
ReplyDeleteHe dominated at the highest level of competition, he is a great athlete and a better person. He will be successful in college and life.
Congradulations to all the nominees You,ve all had great high school careers and should and are athletes of the year in many peoples views. To the rest of you who just want to complain get a life don't be afraid to give someone credit for working hard
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to compare any of the kids that are mentioned here. But I will say that there are better basketball players in this area and better athletes period. The problem is the blogs are throwing kids out there when the one to blame is the writer. His opinion for the last couple years have been head scratchers in all areas. PT had a very good TEAM in all sports no question.
ReplyDeleteIf lapkowicz got a full athletic scholarship then he's the first baseball player, especially at the d-ii level, in history to receive a full athletic scholarship.
ReplyDeletefull athletic scholarships.
ReplyDeleteTeagarden,Lytle,Bladelli and basketball Klimchock,Nemic,Yunetz and Novak.
you dont get full rides in d2 baseball
ReplyDeleteI questions whether he got a full ride for D-2 baseball. They usually split the money up to offer more kids. As far as Wilcox is concerned, he did it at the higher level. That doesn't mean Lapkowicz isn't exceptional, it just means that his numbers are inflated due to playing against weaker competition. There's nothing wrong with saying that, it's not disrespecting his talent. Wilcox won because he was all-state for two sports and won a WPIAL championship in each at the AAAA level. This isn't a career award, it's one year. Nick's accomplishments for one year were greater than all of the other candidates.
ReplyDeleteFREY YOU ARE STILL BETTER
ReplyDeleteSingle A teams are not always great due to the lack of numbers, but you can have great athletes who could compete at any level. They should'nt be slighted because of where there parents chose to live
ReplyDeleteWilcox had a great high school career. It is without question he had the most individual and team success of any Washington county athlete.
ReplyDeleteHe is going D-3 but he is going to have a chance to shine there and get a solid education. He may even have a chance to be an All American.
At the end of the day its easy to argue for or against any athlete, however Wilcox in my opinion is very deserving.
I mean guys you have to remember that kovak was on Wilcox's johnson all year long...its only obvious that he would pick him...
ReplyDeleteAgain, the Observer-Reporter Boys and Girls Athletes of the Year are chosen by the sports staff in a vote.
ReplyDeleteI have a vote, just as everyone else in the sports department.
Alot of good athletes who have been offered division I chances chose a division II or III program so they can play immediately, also few full ride athletic scholarships are offered but alot of money can be found under different titles
ReplyDeleteYes you do get full rides in D II baseball. The top tier players on a D II team get full rides. Yes they split up the money but the top recruits get the full deal. Time to educate again.
ReplyDeleteYes your right. Money can be found but you won't get a full ride in D III. But anything helps these days
ReplyDeleteYes your right. Money can be found but you won't get a full ride in D III. But anything helps these days
ReplyDeleteFrank Scott .his numbers are inflated due to weaker teams?...so you have been to his games? Batting average pretty high.and how many times do you think they walked him..can you do that in AAA or AAAA no because the talent is deeper. A basketball player in AAA or AAAA do you see gimmick defenses not really. How about in AA or A box in one or a triangle two. Point is the kids that are talented in a lower classification work hard there no are no inflating numbers. Nothing comes easy for any kid in any classification.
ReplyDeleteRead the Post Gazette on Todd Thomas athlete of the year. What WPIAL or PIAA title did they win this year?
ReplyDeleteMan I wish my kid was playing soccer he could be athlete of the year and I wouldnt have to have him lifting 3 times a week and speed training 2 times a week and all the bumps and bruises and breaks and 3 a day practices like in football.Congrats kid you deserve it
ReplyDeleteDoes it have to be a senior cause If Michael Hull is'nt the best athlete in Washington Co.I'll eat my hat
ReplyDeleteI think half of his baseball wins came during playoffs-so single A sports are just weak?
ReplyDeleteBethany what a terrible choice for this kid! Good luck though
ReplyDeleteNobody gives full rides in d-2 baseball. Nobody. Period.
ReplyDeleteI had a full ride to the University of Tampa and Georgia College and State University offered me the same for D-2 baseball. So they do offer it.
ReplyDeleteWOW, the envy on this board is screaming....
ReplyDeleteNick's a great kid, a great athlete and he will continue to be very successful in sports and in life.
All you haters out there have a long way to go to ever get your best day to come close to his worst day.
This kid is a winner, those of you wanting to talk smack on him are just envious losers.
Didnt say he was'nt a great kid just not the best athlete.I know the sports that he plays dont demand the sacrifice that Football and Wrestling do.I hope he does well in the future but I'd have to pick another for Athlete of the year
ReplyDeletealex frey is the athlete of the year it is clear....three sports aaa at a high level...has unbelievable athletic talent...is agreat kid...a good student...and a role model for other kids
ReplyDeleteWhy is no one understanding that Mike gave the award to the athlete that had the most successful season! Wilcox is not the best athlete, there is no questioning that. Frey, Hull, Lapkowicz, all those guys may be better athletes. That's not the point...Wilcox was freaking all state in two sports, in AAAA, and won two WPIAL championships! He was the best player in hoops in Washington County and one of the best soccer players. NO ONE ELSE DID WHAT HE DID!
ReplyDeleteI don't care who won it!!!!!!!
ReplyDelete"I had a full ride to the University of Tampa and Georgia College and State University offered me the same for D-2 baseball. So they do offer it."
ReplyDeleteMaybe that's why those program stink.
The best basketball player in Washington County? He's one of the top four or five in the area. His team was tremendous! And he deserved the award. There really is no one that stands out. I think it was a down year for players this year. Its nice knowing that we have players in Washington County playing at the next level though.
ReplyDeleteT.Wilson =Seton Hill
Nick= Bethany
Point guard Wash Hi= Bethany or Juco
Ryan Neimeic= Cal U
Obade= Seton Hill
Good Luck.
whoever said they got a d2 full baseball scholarship is lying...for the record
ReplyDeleteJoby Lapkowicz should have gotten this award nobody works harder than that kid and he carried all 3 teams he played on this year. Not only was he their only threat in football he was their only leader and PG in hoops and I don't even have to leave a comment about him on the diamond he's that good. The numbers speak for themself and he dominated in the single A double A all star game. And now as his teammate in the Fayette County Baseball league he is one of our top pitchers and one of the top pitchers in the league, not to mention the only 2 wins the Carmichaels Legion team had this year were the 2 games he played since he would rather play in a better league with his older brothers in the F.C.B.L. 3 sport star enough said!!!
ReplyDeleteDrew Denham
Frey is the same at a higher level and a true role model for all young kids!
ReplyDeleteGuess what?
ReplyDeleteFrey and Lapkowhatever didn't win.
MOVE ON!
Wilcox 2009 OR Athlete of the Year.
Everyone else......... ISN'T.
Just heard the Bethany head coach left a week or two ago. Any truth.??
